A flowchart exploring the routes into Net Zero

What is Net Zero?

We highly recommend checking out London South Bank University (LSBU)'s and BSRIA’s Net Zero Building Centre Topic Guide for a full examination of what may be included in the net zero future.

The below comes from their introduction:

“The United Nations defines net zero as cutting all greenhouse gas emissions to as close to zero as possible, with any remaining emissions re-absorbed from the atmosphere.”

To keep it short, Dr Ben Lishman describes it in ten words as:

We’re building a world that doesn’t rely on fossil fuels.

It Starts with Training

If you’re at the start of your journey, considering retraining, or building on your current knowledge you will of course need access to the academics, experts and skills to get you there.

Are you at the very beginning?

Retrofit Revolution

This programme is fully-funded by the Mayor of London and the European Social Fund and is specifically for South Londoners who are not currently in work or education. It puts you on the road to a career in sustainability.

You will gain a practical understanding of the UK’s retrofit sector, the variety of jobs, opportunities and progression routes from surveying to installation.

You will be supported to progress into further training or work and meet with an employment coach throughout.

Are you retraining?

Net Zero Futures Bootcamps

These are fully-funded five-week green skills bootcamps for technically minded people and sustainable start-ups from London South Bank University. They are fully-funded by the Mayor of London and HM Government, Department for Education.

On the hunt for the future workers, leaders and innovators, these bootcamps offer real world employable skills in sustainable engineering - from solar power to the circular economy

There will be three groups of 12 participants starting:

  • Monday 24 July 2023
  • Monday 04 September 2023
  • Monday 06 November 2023

The net zero future will encapsulate so many new roles that upskilling your CV is now a necessity.

You can check out our other fully-funded and flexible training opportunities here.

Are you building your professional knowledge?

Net Zero Building Short Courses

Get ahead in the net zero transition with four immersive courses delivering actionable skills across the built environment. LSBU is proud to have created this ground-breaking programme of short courses, designed to upskill individuals across a choice of subjects, all related to net zero buildings.

Short courses cover everything from designing, operating, procuring and leading in net zero building.

Have You Got New Ideas?

Maybe you’ve been through some training and developed an idea or come up with a new sustainable version of a product you already make.

Ideas can come from anywhere – read about Dubs Universe’s new sneakers to see what we mean.

Sustainable Innovation

Our Sustainable Innovation (SI) programme connects London SMEs with LSBU’s academics and expert consultants to bring new clean tech products, processes, and services to market. Our cohort structure provides sustainable businesses the funding for and access to the expertise, facilities and support required to succeed.

As part of the application process, we ask SMEs to identify the key technical challenges they face, and their goals for the coming 6-12 months. Each successful applicant is assigned a team of experts from the schools of Engineering and the Built Environment. Together, we develop a bespoke project for every business.

Professor Abdullah Qaban breaks down the benefits to SMEs from the academic’s perspective here.

Do You Need to See You’re Heading?

If you’re a SME or a start-up you may benefit from our new Sustainable Business Solutions Webinar which is free to SMEs until June 2023.

Are You Ready to Network?

Once you’re established, if your business is based in South London, you can join BIG South London’s Low Carbon Network.

The Low Carbon Innovation Network is a dynamic network of businesses and researchers from across the low carbon and sustainability sector in South London.

Led by specialists in low carbon renewable and secondary energy utilisation from LSBU, it will bring the sector together to share common challenges, opportunities and best practice. This will create opportunities for growth by encouraging collaboration between businesses, research organisations and universities in the area, plus there is a dedicated training programme.

BIG South London may also be able to support you at the development stage too. Check out their funding opportunities here.

So, what’s next for you?

The future is up to you. Hopefully you’ve seen here the spark of a new idea that will change the world or open up new avenues for jobs, your prospects, and your business.
